Re: "U.S. aid to Mideast," (March 9, Letters to the Editor).

It is both offensive and erroneous to assert that U.S. policy in the Middle East is "dedicated to the benefit of 9 million Jews." On the contrary, the United States provides foreign aid to promote our country's national interests, supporting our allies in an unstable world. The suggestion that the United States is acting solely on behalf of Jews carries disturbing echoes of conspiracy canards about "Jewish control" that are widely discredited and should have died out long ago.

Equally outrageous is the allegation that America was attacked on 9/11 because of U.S. support for Israel. Letter-writer Paul Alexander buys into al-Qaeda's post-9/11 Israel-bashing rhetoric, and he ignores al-Qaeda's repeated statements both before and after 9/11 that it is motivated by its ideological opposition to everything the U.S. and the West stand for: democracy, modernism, freedom, globalism and diversity.

Sincerely,

Bruce H. Deboskey

Mountain States Regional Director
