To the Editor:
The comparison of embryonic stem cell research to the medical experiments carried out by Nazi doctors during the Holocaust is inappropriate and demonstrates a fundamental misunderstanding of the nature of the atrocities conducted by Nazi doctors. ("We'll answer for embryo use," March 13.)
Stem cell research seeks to find a cure for disease and to counter human suffering. Nazi doctors deliberately tortured their victims in medical "experiments," distorting and demeaning both science and morality. There is no legitimate comparison between the two, even though reasonable people may differ legitimately in their views of embryonic stem cell research.
It is offensive to compare such research to the barbaric and cruel pseudo-science of Nazi medical experiments.
