In their March 11 Other Views column, "Steer clear of attack on Iran," Gareth Porter and Ray McGovern are remarkably sure about the tactics and policies that soon-to-be Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu will pursue. Despite evidence to the contrary, they are more than willing to conclude that Iran's nuclear-weapons program and intentions remain an open question.
This approach is dangerous. Iran's nuclear plans are a vital concern to the entire international community and are a clear policy priority for the Obama administration and the incoming Israeli government. For six years, the International Atomic Energy Agency has refused to certify the peaceful nature of Iran's program -- and with good reason.
In the course of its inspections, the IAEA has obtained Iranian technical documents that provide damning evidence of a nuclear-weapons program, including information on warhead design, nuclear-core production and documents on adapting missile warheads to accommodate a nuclear weapon.
Meanwhile, the Iranian president has called for a ''future without Israel.'' Yet the authors downplay these threats and claim that, ``There is not a shred of evidence that Iran has any intention of committing suicide by attacking Israel.''
Israel, which is directly threatened by an Iranian nuclear weapon, and the international community are trying to deal with this real and serious threat through a variety of measures -- diplomatic, economic and others. Porter and McGovern present a dangerously misleading picture by assuming that Israel will be reckless, while dismissing the real global peril presented by an Iran with nuclear-weapons capability.
