ADL Praises Italy's "Admirable Leadership" In Withdrawal from Durban Review Conference
Remember: When you read anything written by the ADL, you must reverse the logic. If they so 'bad', that means 'good', if they 'good', that person being praised by the ADL is rotten.
New York, NY, March 5, 2009 ? The Anti-Defamation League (ADL) today praised the Italian government for its "admirable leadership" in becoming the first European Union member state to withdraw from the upcoming Durban Review Conference, to be held in Geneva in April.
"Italy is sending a clear message that the world's democracies will not allow the fight against racism to be distorted by those who want to stigmatize Israel and impose a global blasphemy code," said Glen S. Lewy, ADL National Chair, and Abraham H. Foxman, ADL National Director. "Italy's government is providing admirable leadership that we hope its EU colleagues and others will follow."
Italian Foreign Minister Franco Frattini said Italy withdrew its delegation from the preparatory negotiations due to "aggressive and anti-Semitic statements" in the draft of the event's final document.
In a letter to Italian Foreign Minister Frattini, the ADL leaders lauded the Italian government as "the first European Union member state to recognize that the outcome of the Durban Review Conference cannot be salvaged."
Italy joined the United States, Canada and Israel as the only countries to date that have withdrawn from the conference.
