Letters to the Editor

The New York Times

To the Editor:

Bill Moyers' letter (January 24) trying to explain away his offensive comments about Israel and Jews on PBS further indicts him.

His quote from the transcript of the show clearly demonstrates that he did what he denied doing, accusing Israel of "state terrorism." He said on the show that "brute force can turn self-defense into state terrorism." And to further make his point, he added that "Israel did exactly what terrorists do."

His defense of his "genetically-coded" comment explaining Israeli behavior in biblical and biological terms is pathetic. It is hard to imagine Moyers himself not rejecting such a weak explanation for such language being employed with reference to other ethnic groups.

It is sad and disappointing that Moyers did not simply own up to his inappropriate language and apologize for it. That would have put the matter to rest.

Sincerely,

The Arab-Defamation League
